Low/High Magnification Optical Microscope Observation by Intelligent Microscope

High precision microstructure observation of metallic materials is possible by taking advantage of state-of-the-art intelligent microscope.

Optical microscope observation of microstructures of metallic materials can be obtained from high magnification to low magnification continuously with instantaneous change of the magnification.

The intelligent microscope offers various features: automatic composition of low magnification image by connecting high magnification images with automatic continuous shooting; and instantaneous shifting to high magnification observation from low magnification image. These unique features are extremely useful during client's attendance observation which was unlikely to be performed in conventional optical microscope observation and work well on detail analysis of various welding portions or segregated areas. High magnification observation supports clear observation up to 1,000x which caused a problem of focusing previously.

The intelligent microscope has a set of integrated software of various standards ready to be applied to the measurement of inclusions in steel (ASTM E 45, JIS G 0555), measurement of crystal grain size (ASTM E 112, JIS G 0551), measurement of ferrite content, etc. accurately.

JFE-TEC introduced intelligent microscope with fully automated modules. It features motorized focus, motorized revolver, programmable function, etc. enabling us to perform observation at the highest level.

Magnification range of optical microscope observation is 50x to 1,000x.

With a set of measurement software conforming to official standards is integrated in the microscope, it is possible to perform the following types of measurement in high accuracy:

  • Inclusion measurements

    Corresponding standards: ASTM E 45, JIS G 0555

  • Crystal grain size measurements

    Corresponding standards: ASTM E 112, JIS G 0551

  • Ferrite content measurements

    Automatic measurement by binarization of photograph of etched structure (possible both by manual and automatic operations)

Instantaneous Linking Between Low/High Magnification Optical Microstructure Observation

It offers automatic composition of low magnification image by connecting high magnification images (such as 100x) with high-speed continuous shooting of 400 shots/m. It is also possible to jump to the original high magnification observation instantaneously, enabling us to link macroscopic positional relationship with detailed analysis easily. High magnification observation can support clear observation up to 1,000x by selecting object lenses.

Measurement of Nonmetallic Inclusions

Property of steel is significantly affected by contained trace amount of nonmetallic foreign matters (or inclusions). In particular, result of cleanliness measurement which classifies shape, size, amount, etc. of inclusions to be a cause of fracture or defects of steel products is a major factor to determine performance of steel. Linking function of the intelligent microscope makes it possible to measure nonmetallic inclusions quickly and accurately.

Measurement of Grain Size

Grain size of metallic materials (crystal grain size) significantly affects their mechanical properties, toughness, and electromagnetic properties. Use of the intelligent microscope makes it possible to measure crystal grain size quickly and accurately.

Measurement of Ferrite Content

Based on the image of metal structures of dual phase stainless steel and three-phase stainless steel which are excellent in corrosion resistance, automatic measurement of ferrite content, martensite content, etc. is possible by area ratio. This result gives an important guide to composition design. (Etching technique developed by JFE-TEC will be used for three-phase steel.)
