Auto Body Dismantling and Structural/Material Investigation

Responding to heighted needs for protection of the global environment and improved crashworthiness.

In order to satisfy both auto body weight reduction for improved fuel efficiency, and higher strength/stiffness for improved crashworthiness and drivability, various elements must be achieved at a high order in the development of an automobile body. As basic data for this, investigation of the structure and selection of materials (strength of basic materials, use of coated materials or not, etc.) of existing automobile bodies is extremely important.

In JFE-TEC's “Auto Body Dismantling and Structural/Material Investigation,” it is possible to propose, select and combine the content of the investigation and the specific investigation items in line with the needs of the individual client in order to respond accurately to what the client wants to know.

Major Flow of Auto Body Dismantling/Investigation Work

Discussion of the dismantling/investigation specification (investigation items, procedure) with the client, and decision of the specification.
Receipt of the object automobile body. JFE-TEC can receive autos either in the body-in-white condition or the actual automobile condition. It is also possible to dismantle actual automobiles, in which the suspension parts, etc. are in a drivable condition, to the body-in-white condition.
Auto body is segmented into 2 parts along the center line across the width.

The driver's side of the segmented body is dismantled to part units by drilling the spot welds of each part.

The desired investigations of the dismantled parts are carried out (for example, material strength, coating treatment, etc.).
Judgment of material strength rankings
The investigation results are arranged and compiled for the entire auto body, and a database is also prepared in tabular form for data from the individual dismantled parts.

Information Obtainable from Auto Body Dismantling/Investigation: Main Investigation Items that JFE-TEC Can Provide

(1) Auto body manufacturing items

Number of spot welds (number of spot welds counted in each part, number of welds)

Parts where adhesives were used, and its length

Investigation of use of other joining methods such as laser welding, etc.

(2) Auto body component parts/materials investigation items

Component parts and number of parts in each block making up auto body

Results of determination of strength ranking of materials of parts (parts applying hot stamping, etc.)

Determination of whether coating treatment was applied to materials of parts or not

Results of determination of nominal sheet thickness of materials of parts

Tailored blank parts

Database (tabular form) of results of investigation of dismantled parts Can also be provided with links to photographs of external appearance of parts

(3) Auto body corrosion resistance specification items

Range, film thickness and coating weight of undercoat on auto body back side

Parts, length and weight of sealer applied to back side and interior of auto body

Condition and coating weight of wax coating on body interior

Paint film thickness on front/back sides dismantled parts (measured by electromagnetic film thickness meter)

(4) Submaterial-related items

Parts where dent sheets (vibration damping sheets), melting sheets were applied, weight applied

Parts filled with foaming agent, weight of agent

Parts where mastic sealer, spot sealer, etc. was applied, weight applied

(5) Separate investigation and work items

Supplementary investigation of designated parts is also possible; for example, cross-sectional observation of parts where spot welds and adhesives were used. (Samples can be taken from the passenger's side of the segmented body or before dismantling the driver's side.)

Cross-sectional rubbed copies of parts of auto body at designated positions by the client.

Measurement of 3-dimensional shape of main dismantled parts (reassembly data processing is also possible).

Body reassembly of dismantled parts (reassembly of dismantled parts to the auto body condition by using screws)

Flow of Work

Flow of Auto Body Dismantling/Investigation Work

Consultation on specification of investigation content (interview with client on client's requested content)
Receipt of automobile to be investigated
Kick-off meeting (If necessary, for example, in case samples must be taken before dismantling, etc.)
Work related to investigation items before auto body dismantling (for example, for auto body corrosion resistance specification, etc., investigation items and sampling before dismantling)
Division of auto body into two segments, dismantling of the driver's side
Work related to investigation of dismantled parts
Meeting for inspection of dismantled parts (If necessary; confirmation of dismantling condition by the client, reconfirmation of investigation content and object parts.)
Investigation of materials of dismantled parts (material microstructure, cross-sectional observation of surface layer, material hardness, material tensile strength, etc.)
Determination of materials of dismantled parts (nominal sheet thickness, strength ranking, coated or not, etc.).
Report of dismantling/investigation results When submitting the report of the investigation results and returning the dismantled parts, it is also possible to reassembly the auto body.
