Hyperspectral Camera to Be Installed in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)

JFE-TEC provides an airborne hyperspectral camera with a total weight of approximately 2 kg. Considerably smaller and lighter than the traditional ones, it can even be installed on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Measurement based on a hyperspectral camera installed in a UAV makes the flight preparations incomparably simpler than those for manned aircraft, providing pinpoint collection of spectral data at high resolution.

Overview

Remote sensing based on a hyperspectral camera is used in many fields such as agriculture, forestry, and environmental surface and marine observations.

Remote sensing based on an unmanned aircraft makes the flight preparations incomparably simpler than those for manned aircraft. Under the circumstances, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are receiving attention as a means of providing pinpoint imaging at high resolution.

We have successfully developed a hyperspectral camera installable in UAVs by reducing in size and weight of the sensor head, computer, and the positional/posture information recorder (GPS/IMU), which are the main components of airborne hyperspectral cameras.

As the sensor header, we use a compact, lightweight camera - the hyperspectral camera ImSpector

As the computer for control and data recording, we use an ultrasmall one.

We have achieved a total weight of approximately 2 kg by replacing the expensive, heavy GPS/IMU, namely the GPS receiver used in car navigation systems and other equipment with a gyroscope used for image stabilization for cameras.

Measurements are made by visually observing the UAV and storing the positional and posture information at the time of data collection along with spectral data.

After the measurements, you can use the special-purpose geometric correction software to correct the flight altitude and pitching/rolling and inclination of the aircraft based on the positional and posture information obtained during the measurements in order to spatially reconstruct the spectral information.

JFE-TEC is responsible for manufacturing and providing the system.

We will propose a system configuration suitable for your purpose that satisfies your requirements for the measurement wavelength range, shooting distance, and resolution.
